Is your child like this?

Many children are. Find what you see at home. Each sign has one small first step.

  • Does not talk yet

    What you may see
Says no words, or only a few. Points or pulls your hand to ask for things.
    What you can do now
Watch how your child asks for things. Write down 3 examples. Show them to a child doctor or speech therapist. Ask for a hearing test too.
    See a doctor if
Your child cannot do what most children do at their age, or stops saying words they used to say.

  • Cannot sit still, runs away

    What you may see
Always moving. Runs off at home or outside.
    What you can do now
First keep your child safe. Lock the doors that lead outside. Keep your child away from water and roads. Put your phone number in your child’s pocket. Note when it happens.
    See a doctor if
Running away puts your child in danger, or the restlessness goes on, is very strong, and causes trouble at home or school.
  • Upset by noise or touch

    What you may see
Covers ears. Cries at some clothes, crowds or bath time.
    What you can do now
Notice what upsets your child, and what calms them. Make things gentler, like a quiet place or soft clothes.
    See a doctor if
It stops daily things like bathing, dressing or eating.
  • Does not play with others

    What you may see
Plays alone. Does not look up when you call their name.
    What you can do now
Notice which games your child likes. Write it down for the doctor. Ask for a hearing test too.
    See a doctor if
Your child is 9 months or older and does not answer to their name, or stops doing things they did before.
  • Sudden anger

    What you may see
Big anger or crying, very fast. Hard to calm down.
    What you can do now
Note what happened just before, and what helped after.
    See a doctor if
Your child hurts themselves or others, or the anger goes on for more than a few weeks.
  • Eats only a few foods

    What you may see
Eats the same few foods. Refuses most others.
    What you can do now
Write down the foods your child eats. Do not force food.
    See a doctor if
Your child is not gaining weight, or coughs and chokes when eating: see a doctor soon. If your child chokes and cannot breathe, give firm blows on the back at once, and get someone to call for emergency help.

These signs can have many causes. Only a doctor or therapist can check your child. This page cannot tell you what your child has.
