For parents

Can autism be cured?

No. Autism is not an illness, so there is no cure. But help can make talking, learning and daily life easier. Starting early matters.

What is autism?

Autism is a difference in how the brain develops. It is not an illness.

What helps children with autism?

  • Speech and language therapy. This is the most common help.
  • Help that builds talking and social skills.
  • An occupational therapist, for the senses and daily tasks.

Is there a medicine for autism?

No medicine treats autism itself. A doctor may give medicine for other problems, like fits or sleep. Do not stop a medicine without asking the doctor.

Why start early?

Indian child doctors say help should start as early as possible. Do not wait for a final answer: help can start while the doctors are still checking.

What happened with our daughter?

A doctors’ report said our daughter Anwesha had autism. At 4 she did not talk. With help, week after week, small things changed. Today, at 9, she is a talkative, smart kid who does many things by herself. Some things are still hard. We cannot promise the same for your child.

Where can we get help?

Start with a child doctor. The government’s free early intervention centre (DEIC) is meant to have a speech therapist, a psychologist and a special educator. Ask at your district hospital.

Be careful of anyone who promises a cure

  • No one can promise a cure.
  • Indian child doctors say there is no proof that “alternative” cures work.
  • Ask a speech therapist for their Rehabilitation Council of India registration number.

Questions parents ask

Will my child be able to talk?

We cannot promise that. Every child is different. Help can improve talking and social skills.

Is autism a disease?

No. It is a difference in how the brain develops.

Should we wait for a diagnosis before starting help?

No. Indian child doctors say help can start while the doctors are still checking.
